Holistic Dog Supplements

Holistic dog supplements are an important aspect of quality pet nutrition. We are happy to announce a new and improved Agility Formula. Our Life’s Abundance holistic veterinarian formulator, Dr. Jane Bicks, has made a great product even better!

In addition to Agility’s current health-promoting ingredients such as MSM and glucosamine, the new and improved formula contains hyaluronic acid and other effective joint-health ingredients. Hyaluronic acid helps to keep cartilage strong and flexible to better cushion joints. The added nutrients work synergistically with the current ingredients in Agility Formula to give your companion animal a highly-effective, multi-action joint-health formula.

The good news … due to efficiencies in manufacturing, the new Agility Formula will cost slightly less than the current one and we are pleased to pass these savings onto you. The Autoship price for the new 60-count tablet bottle of Agility Formula will be $32.25, so you will save $1.00 on each bottle!

The great news … we will be introducing a new 120-count tablet “economy size” bottle of Agility Formula, which will cost only $56.95. That’s a $9.55 savings off two current 60-count bottles!

Holistic Pet Gifts for the Holidays

Holistic Pet Gifts for the holidays are a great way of showing you care.

Winter means holidays and holidays often mean new puppies arrive as a special gift to loved ones.

Winter also means cold weather and with that type of weather special care must be taken for puppies and older dogs. This is doesn't mean not taking your pet out for a walk - it just means the walks are best taken more frequently and for shorter time periods. See more helpful cold weather tips at: http://blog.lifesabundance.com/post/2010/11/19/Useful-Tips-for-Winter-Puppy-Care.aspx?realname=20021272

Healthy Skin - Vital Part of Holistic Pet Care

Holistic Pet Care tells us the skin is the largest organ of our pets body. Skin helps to regulate body temperature, prevent dehydration and protect against injury and disease.

Did you know dogs do not sweat like we do. In there paws are eccrine glands, which secrete a watery substance like sweat, although this typically only occurs when they are nervous and under stress. Young pets are particularly suspectible to skin problems because their skin is more sensitive and their immune systems are not fully developed.

Natural Dog Treats, especially our Tasty Rewards Training Treats, are a great tool to use when following the techniques in this month’s Your AKC eNewsletter article Simple Training Tips for You and Your Canine Companion. Life's Abundance Natural Dog Food vs. California Natural

Recently I was asked by a client if we had a similar natural dog food to California Natural. We definitely have not just a similar product, but what I believe is a better product. Let me explain why I believe that.

Life’s Abundance contains actual fruits and vegetables: Dried Carrots, Dried Celery, Dried Beets, Dried Parsley, Dried Lettuce, Dried Watercress, Dried Blueberries, Dried Broccoli, Pomegranate.

I looked through the ingredients list for California Natural (Chicken Meal and Rice Adult) twice and didn’t see any fruits and vegetables. If I missed them let me know.

Life’s Abundance contains the following direct fed microbials: Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus casei Fermentation Product, Dried Bifidobacterium thermophilum Fermentation Product, Dried Enterococcus faecium Fermentation Product. similar to those found in supermarket yogurts. Direct-fed microbials help support healthy immune and digestive systems.

California Natural doesn’t have any listed.

Another reason I don’t like it is the Guaranteed Analysis differences.

And If that’s not enough to convince you to make a switch to Life’s Abundance let’s talk price.

Life's Abundance Premium Health Food - 40# bag retail is 67.94 (or 1.70 / pound). Autoship/Wholesale is $60.64 – an even greater savings

Please remember to use holistic pet safe cleaners around your house. While reading an article from Suite 101 about Poisonous Plants for Dogs I noticed little was said about household cleaners and pet bath supplies. The AKC Canine Health Foundation

Just received my "YourAKC - September 2010" newsletter. Please support the fight against OSA.
The AKC Canine Health Foundation (AKC/CHF) is currently funding two significant OSA research projects to:
  • valuate the efficiency of a potential drug for treating the disease. This drug is using gene-based therapy that activates the immune system to prevent or delay recurrence and metastatic spread.

  • Identify genetic changes in the bone tumors themselves. This will allow researchers to develop genetic tests for OSA, which will then lead to a better understanding of the disease, enabling development of more targeted treatment options.

What is a Nutritious Cat Food?

Here is a very good article that also you can apply the same thinking to your dogs food.
Even though the ingredients, beyond the guaranteed analysis are important we need to start looking beyond those things.

We need to start looking at the quality of the ingredients in our pets food!
We need to start looking at the quality of the manufacturers of our pets food!

Pet Food Quality - Beyond Ingredients

Pet food quality goes beyond the ingredients being correct. Quality
means that the required ingredients are clean fresh, and
unadulterated. These are the same concerns we must have in regards to
the foods we feed our pets. All the right ingredients being included
in the required amounts are worthless if there is toxicity. Check out the full ezine article here.

So You Think You Want a Dog - Repost of some great info

I don't think Heather (AKA Wiztherewoz), from PetLovers.com Forum could have said it any better, Thanks Heather!

Remember the best non-recalled dog products out there,Life’s Abundance
Never had a dog before? Complete novice? Think you want one?

Then I'm aiming these notes your way. Please have a quick read. If you're still sure you'd like a dog in your life afterwards, then I'm sure you're in for a wonderful time with your new addition.

My name's Heather, I'm one of the people who adopts dogs that others have thrown away. I'm here to tell you the honest truth of the less appealing side of dog ownership, with quick reality checks you may not necessarily find in a doggy handbook, in the hope that you don't end up being one of those people who lets their dog down.

    Number 1: Dogs defecate!

If you make the decision to bring a dog/puppy into your home, it will be your responsibility to house-train it. Even if you adopt one that is already house-trained, there may well be an adjustment period as the dog settles in to its new surroundings. *most dogs that are fully house trained will not have setbacks from moving into a new home, but there is always the possibility*

You must never blame your dog for any accidents it may have in your house. It is not fair to banish the dog to your yard, re-home the dog, hit the dog, yell at the dog, rub the dog's nose in the mess, or punish the dog in any other way for your mistake.

Just as you would need to stay patient and supportive with a small child learning how to use the potty properly, you must remain patient and supportive with your dog.

As dogs get older, they can become forgetful/senile or lose control of their functions.
If you do not think that you could put up with any messes in your house, even from a dog that you've grown to love, then it would be fairer to decide against adopting a dog at all than it would be to re-home one at the time of its life it would need you the most.

If, however, a bit of faecal matter on your floors during the vulnerable time in your beloved friend's life would not be the end of the world to you, read on!

    Number 2: Dogs urinate!

First thing you'll have to do in the morning is let the dog out for a wee. You'll probably need to let them out to wee last thing before you go to bed, and you'll need to let them out to wee several times throughout the day. They can't be expected to stay in all day long with their legs crossed. Especially the particularly young and the particularly old. Healthy adult dogs can hold their wee in for quite a long time, but it's kinder if you can make arrangements for somebody to pop in to let them out to relieve themselves if you're going to be out all day at any point.

Sometimes dogs can develop issues like urinary incontinence, which need veterinary treatment. If you find your dog dribbling in the house despite being house-trained, a check-up at the vets is important.

And, if you're fastidious about your garden, be aware - their urine may leave stained patches in your lawn. If that's something that would bother you enough to re-home the dog, maybe have a re-think about getting one at all.

If, however, you can cope with a bit of wee-wee - read on!

Number 3: Dogs eat and drink!

Yep, this is where all that poop and pee stems from.
Dogs have dietary needs just like people do. Just because a can is labelled "dog food" doesn't necessarily mean it is going to be good for your dog. Please do a little bit of research before you decide on what to feed your dog.

A lot of 'human food' is bad for dogs. Some is toxic to dogs. Be aware of what is suitable foodstuff and what is not before you empty your dinner plate into your dog's bowl.

It may sound obvious, but dogs need access to clean fresh water every day. Dogs should be discouraged from drinking river water or water from puddles, as they can contain diseases such as leptospirosis. Drinking soiled water can cause diarrhoea. Don't let your dog drink from the toilet. Chemicals found in toilet cleaner can be toxic.

So, you're happy to provide appropriate food and water for your new friend - read on!

    Number 4: Dogs shed!

Dogs have fur. Some dogs have more fur than others. Some dogs shed more than others. Some dogs shed so much that a ball of loose hair may be sent blowing around your house like tumbleweed every time you open a door if you don't vacuum enough.

You may be thinking, "Aren't there those hypoallergenic breeds you can get now? They won't shed anything, right?" Well, stop thinking that please. Dogs aren't pillow cases, they're living creatures and should be considered as such.

Hair is not a big deal, unless you're severely allergic. It can be controlled with regular grooming of your dog and regular vacuuming of your house.

If even the slightest bit of dog hair on your clothes is going to be enough to change your mind about having the dog, then please don't get one in the first place. No matter which dog you get, unless it's completely bald, there will be the odd stray hair.

If a bit of fluff is just a bit of fluff to you - read on!

    Number 5: Dogs smell!

Not always. Not all dogs, not all the time. But in general when dogs get older, roll in nasty smelling dead things, dive in filthy puddles, are unwell, eat bad quality food, or are stressed - they'll smell. Either body odour/bad breath/bad gas.

Regular grooming, an occasional bath, good quality food, regular cleaning of bedding and good general care should eliminate bad smells as much as possible.

If you are a finicky person who simply can't tolerate smells in your home, then reconsider getting a dog, rather than getting one that you'll end up resenting or banishing outside or re-homing completely.

If you're fine with a bit of occasional stinkiness - read on!

    Number 6: Dogs bark!

All dogs are different. Some dogs bark more than others, some have high piercing barks, some have booming barks, some have extraordinarily loud barks, some roar, some yip, some howl.

Dogs do not tend to make a lot of noise for no reason. If your dog is barking for "no reason" there is usually a problem that the dog's trying to communicate to you in the only way it knows how. That problem could be anything; boredom, loneliness, fear, frustration, stress, confusion, etc. Some dogs bark with excitement, too.

At some point in your life with your dog, you'll likely have to endure some noise. And you'll need to be patient with your dog, and be the best dog owner you can be so that your dog is happy and content, to avoid unnecessary barking.

If that doesn't put you off, and there's no real reason it should if you're ready to take care of your dog to the best of your ability - read on!

    Number 7: Dogs walk!

Dogs need exercise. Daily walks are important for the majority of dogs. You will have to train your dog to walk on a lead, to be safe in public, and to be perfect at the recall for off-lead play in a safe area. You'll have to train your dog to be sociable with other dogs and with people.

Unless you live on a farm, letting the dog out for a wander around your yard isn't going to be enough. Regardless of breed, your dog will need to go out for walks away from home. Some breeds will need to cover less miles than others of course. An appropriate length walk for your dog before you go off to work will help your dog settle down while you're not there. Another walk when you get back home will have the dog ready to relax for the night. An extra walk where you can squeeze it in will be icing on the cake for a healthy dog.

For physical exercise, for socialisation, for mental stimulation, for training, for bonding with you and just for the dog's entertainment, daily walks are important.

If you're ready to put other things aside to make time for walking your dog - read on!

    Number 8: Dogs get sick!

At some point in your time together, your dog will need a vet. Whether for vaccinations, check-up, dental treatment, sickness, injury, old age problems, to buy flea treatment - your dog will need a vet.

    It will cost you money.

You cannot avoid getting veterinary care for your dog when it needs attention to save money. You know before you get this dog that it will need veterinary attention at some point. You are deciding to get a dog anyway - therefore it is your responsibility to get this dog the treatment it needs whenever it needs it.

If you're completely happy with that, please read on to my final point...
Natural Pet Products and Joint Health

The owner of an 80lb. Golden Retriever, who has been feeding Nutro Natural Choice for Large Breeds because it contains Glucosamine/Chondroitin which is suppose to be good for joints recently ask of me several questions.
Does your company make a dog food specifically for Large Breeds? Or do you feel that the quality of your food is enough? My Vet has okayed the Nutro/Natural Choice.

Our company makes one dog food (Life’s Abundance)

that, because of quality and formula, is suitable for all dogs (puppy, adult, and senior). When researching the ingredients of the food you currently feed I definitely found a concern. That is, the 3rd through 4th items in the ingredients list are all rice ingredients… ground rice, rice flour and rice bran. Though they’re a mixture of both high and low quality cereal grains, there’s a bigger issue to consider here… The questionable practice of ingredient splitting. Splitting is the process of dividing an abundant (and inferior) ingredient into separate, lighter-weight portions. This can artificially raise a lower quantity meat component… to a higher position on the ingredients list.

If you were to combine all three items, the rice would likely occupy a higher position on the list… probably nudging out the lamb meal to become the predominant ingredient in this food.

For an 80 pound family member Nutro recommends feeding 3-1/2 – 4-1/2 cups (low activity) or 4-1/3 – 5-1/2 cups(moderate activity). Life’s Abundance recommended feeding is 2 1/2 to 3 cups for an 80 pound family member. That’s a whole cup in savings each and every day.

I simply did a quick search for price comparison and found a 30 pound bag of Nutro for 44.99 – or about 1.50 / pound.

Life’s Abundance 40 pound bag wholesales (on autoship) 60.64 – or about 1,51 / pound, but you’ll still save money, because our Life’s Abundance is more dense in nutrients and at the same time get a food that is of better quality. Life’s Abundance has NEVER been recalled, Nutro has.

My recommendation would be to go with the higher quality more nutrient rich Life’s Abundance Food and supplement with our Agility formula for the joints. Our Agility formula provides 500 mg of Glucosamine and MSM, twice what is in Nutro. Serve Agility at 1 ½ tablets per day after the first week. Of course feel free to have your vet check our ingredients for both the food and supplement.

An autoship order of one 40 pound bag of Life’s Abundance and two container of Agility Supplements every 2 months would cost just over 127.00 before tax and shipping. A small price to pay for the benefit of your dogs health. Should you find that you ever need to adjust the timing of your autoship that is easily done either online or by calling our customer service department. I am sure you will see a marked difference in your pets health and quality of life. You may also want to become a representative once you see how great our products are.

    Natural Dog Food Info

    MEAT

If chicken meal is in your approximately 90 percent of it meat. If your pet products have real meat it has much more water, therefor weighs more and raises up on the ingredients label. Meat in the pet food industry is often called de-boned meat. What is de-boned meat…the meat left on the bone after the “real meat” was removed.

    MYTHS

Beet pulp can cause tear staining to be red, is a cheap filler and erodes the inside of dogs intestines. Beat pulp is just the fiber of the sugar beet. No sugar is in there, it’s a fiber. Beet pulp, when it gets to the intestines starts to make food for intestines. The intestines need special foods and fiber beet pulp is great for this. Beet pulp increases the size of cells in intestines which enables more nutrient absorption. It also regulates the intestine to allow for regular bowel movements. It absorbs water which is needed in the stool. Sugar beet pulp is grey not red!

Relationship between beet pulp and live pro-biotics. Pro-biotics provide the right level of PH (acid) to make the intestinal cells more acid to eliminate the bad bacteria and enable good bacteria. The largest organ in the body is the intestines which helps with immunity.

    PROTEIN and FAT

If you feed a dog (puppy) and youlet it eat all the fat it wants it gains weight fast. So muscles and tissues are growing faster than the bones. You want the tissues, muscles to grow evenly at the same time. Life's Abundance has 26 % protein. Studies show that 26% is about where the protein should be. Large breed puppies should be on food that has about 26 % protein. The goal is to build the bones strong early on so they can handle the weight gain. Look at the percentage of protein in adult food, less than ours (about 24%). Puppies need more and will eat to meet their needs.

Why choose Life’s Abundance for your natural pet products?

Why choose Life’s Abundance for your natural pet products? The two reasons that stand out in my mind are first that Life’s Abundance is APHIS Certified. That is a strict certification to allow sales in European Union countries. Also Life’s Abundance has never been recalled You don’t have to trust me on that, just go out to the FDA website and research it yourself. Do a search for keywords that include Life’s Abundance product names as well as Ohio Pet Foods. If you find a recall that, I do not know of I hope you will let me know.

Life’s Abundance is a producer of holistic pet products that include natural dog food, and natural dog treats, healthy cat food, cat supplements and nutritional supplements for dogs.

We offer human grade products, stuff you could actually eat! Our ingredients include high quality proteins, whole grains, an antioxidant system, and direct fed microbials. All this makes for one healthy pet! In another post I will talk about the benefits that my beautiful yellow lab Brandi has experienced being on Life’s Abundance natural dog foods, natural treats and nutritional supplements.

The point is to be aware of ingredients beyond what is contained on the labels of the products you purchase for your pets. You must consider the quality of the products and that is where Life’s Abundance excels, thanks to our holistic minded vet formulator Dr. Jane Bicks. Not only do we provide the right ingredients but also the quality of our ingredients is number one. That is, after all, how we can be APHIS certified.

Compare Life’s Abundance to other manufactures. There are many dog food comparison sites out there. They will all talk about the ingredients of the various pet manufactures. In fact to be AAFCO compliant certain ingredients must be there. The question you need to ask of that site is what the quality of the ingredients the manufacturers use is. Anyone can talk about the ingredients that are supposed to be in the products and whether they are there or not. Do a comparison of the dog food comparisons sites you are looking at. See how varied in opinion they are. Do yourself and your pet a BIG favor. Look at the quality of the ingredients that are used. All you have to do is ask.

4 Easy Steps to Evaluating Dog Food

Dog food comparison consists of 4 simple steps that will verify that pet foods said to be nutritionally balanced are the truth. We do not know what dogs and cats need. Science has not caught up with the pet food industry. Fish oil (for example) – There is no requirement but omega 3s support immune systems and nervous systems. What is the difference between Life’s Abundance and other companies? Life’s Abundance is a marriage between science and nature.

4 easy steps to evaluating dog food
    1. See if the pet food line is a one-stage product line or a multi stage line.
That tells you the philosophy of the company. We have one bag of food that is good for all life stages. What is the difference in the philosophy? When a manufacturer has a several food line, they lower the protein levels to save money in the adult and senior products. Protein is the building block of the body! Definition of aging is the inability to utilize protein. Seniors need more and better quality protein. Why would you cut back on that?

    2. Guaranteed Analysis (must be looked at).
Remember about 18% protein is the minimum for dogs. If a puppy food has 20% protein, is that enough for a youthful growing puppy. Is that even enough for an adult dog? You want a moderate to high amount of protein. Protein is expensive. How will manufactures save money? They save money by adjusting the amount of protein.

Fat is also very expensive. Look for about 10% less fat than protein. Fat are the worker bees to get the bricks built. If not enough fat then the bricks cannot be made into the body.

Fiber - Weight loss food will typically have large amounts of fiber. Theoretically, that fills up the dog, but it really does not. The hypothalamus will tell your brain that your body missing something and will eat until it gets what it needs.

    3. Look at the Ingredients
How many animal proteins are in the food? It does not matter where in the list because it’s done by weight. Count the cereals in the list. Do not worry where they are on the list – just count how many.

If you see corn or wheat – those grains are being used for proteins and are very sensitive to mold. Why would you use an ingredient that has a potential of being toxic and killing a pet.

If Turkey and Chicken (not meal) are listed that is going to be high in water. Is that better than meal? When you use meat, you have mechanical deboned meat. It’s not muscle meat …it’s like the turkey carcass you have left at thanksgiving. There are small pockets of meat but it’s mostly tendons, ligaments, fat, etc. Is it a lot of protein? No – How many proteins do tendons, ligaments, etc have?

When you use meal that is made from the muscle meat of the animal and its dried. You have 90% concentrated protein. Look for the great foods to have meal!

Are there probiotics? If no then the manufacturer is not being fair to you. The intestines are the largest immune organ there is. It has to be fed to work properly. The blood of the body does not feed it; it is fed by friendly bacteria and the breakdown of fiber. Not having probiotics is like not having protein.

Is there an Antioxidant System that combines antioxidants with fruits and vegetables? Vitamins and minerals alone just do not cut it.

Sodium Selinate - AAFCO has been petitioned to remove Sodium Seliante. It is a toxic ingredient. Selenium Yeast is an acceptable substitute. Menadione is also very toxic and AAFCO has been petitioned to remove it.

Do not just look at the puppy line, the adult line, or the senior line. Look at all lines across the board. If a manufacturer is different across their line, you should ask yourself why. Would you trust the puppy food that seems perfect, based on the above information, if they wind up shortchanging the adults or the seniors?

    4. Beyond the label
The company and their practices: Are they honest. What is the quality? Where do the ingredients come from? Is it caught fish or farmed? Did the fish farm win environmental awards? Does the farm provide to restaurants as well?

Is the plant APHIS certified for sale to the European community? That is the highest certification available in the United States. Do they test regularly for salmonella? Do they inspect their suppliers? Are they jumping from one supplier to another trying to find the best deal?

Does the plant use fast cook for more nutrient retention? What happens once the food is made and put in the bag? Does it sit in trucks or warehouses for a extended periods of time? Life’s Abundance goes out that night or next day and is kept in our warehouse for only 6 -8 weeks.

Quality Control. Will a company care if you report to them your dog got sick. If you let Life’s Abundance your dog got sick you will get contacted by our vet formulator – Dr. Jane right away! Dr. Jane keeps samples of every single batch for one year, and can go back and test at any time if there are ever any problems.
